Ellipsometry of nanosystems

Research Fields:
Physics

Previous and Current Research

  • Near-field optics;
  • Ellipsometry;
  • Plasmonics;
  • Optical sensors

In spite of the explosive growth of the investigations and results in promising areas as plasmonics as well as the application of different control methods to systems with metallic nanoparticles, many details of the collective behavior of randomly distributed nanoparticles are still unclear.It was experimentally shown that the standard models of the effective medium approximation can’t correctly describe the behavior of experimental spectra.

For solution of this problem we built the self-consistent theory of the response of a sub-monolayer of interacting nano-particles by Green function method. Obtaining in such a way the response of the layer for the external illumination we are able to calculate reflection coefficients of the whole system and to construct the ellipsometric model based on the optical and geometrical parameters of the particles.

The shift of the local particle resonance by covering of particles by additional layer is well-known to be the basis of optical sensors on local palsmons. Using the developed formalism we calculated effective dielectric function of the layer of gold nanoparticles on the glass depending on its shape and the parameters of the layer of particle.

Future Projects and Goals

Calculation of the optical properties of different configuration of nanosystems using Boundary Element method for solution of Maxwell’s equations.
