Physics of Metals and Ceramics

Research Fields:
Physics

Previous and Current Research

  1. Synthesis and investigation of new multicomponent (including quasi-crystalline and amorphous) metal alloys based on transition metals;
  2. Elaboration of new methods of obtaining and research of nanocomposite (including multilayer) materials, gas thermal coating, high-temperature superconducting ceramics, silicon carbide fibers, thermally expanded (including modified and intercalated) graphite, carbon nanotubes, diamond and diamond-like films, and so on.

The laboratory carries out research work aimed at investigation the structure and physical properties of nanocomposite (nanolayered) materials based on transition metals and carbon, which opens possibilities of their introduction into production in order to reduce material and energy consumption of the respective products of national industry. For today these are:

  • †magnetic seals for metal compounds,
  • †highly efficient screens for electromagnetic radiation protection,
  • †hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials,
  • †filters for cleaning grease and petroleum products from metal particles,
  • †electro stable, resistant to aggressive environments heaters,
  • †sensors gases,
  • †antistatics,
  • †highly stable resistors and so on.†

Future Projects and Goals

  • materials resistant to high shock loads

Methodological and Technical Expertise

  • Structural investigations: diffractometry, electron and metallographic microscopy;
  • †Methods of thermoelectric power, electrical resistance, determination of the electrons work function, the thermal coefficient of resistance, and so on;
  • †Measurements of the amplitude and temperature dependences of internal friction;
  • †Measurement of heat properties of materials (thermal conductivity, specific heat, thermal expansion, etc.)
  • †Magnetometric methods of research (definition of magnetic hysteresis, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of materials);
  • †Methods of physical and mechanical researches (tensile strength, microhardness, etc.)
